ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY TESTING, (EMC)

Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing which is commonly referred to as "EMC immunity testing" have become an important part of product design all over the world. In January of 1996, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) issued mandatory directives regarding products to be marketed in the European Union (EU). This directive made it mandatory for electronic equipment which is to be sold in Europe meet certain EMC immunity criteria. Thus giving the consumer a level of confidence that the equipment will operate in a reliable manner when the equipment is used or installed in its intended environment. Since different types of equipment have a need to be more reliable than others, such as medical device that monitors a patients vital signs compared to a home computer used for internet access, product specific standards have been written. 

Unfortunately for manufacturers of electronic equipment, the evolution of these standards is on going on a continual basis. Some changes to the standards may be relatively minor while other standards are completely re-written and supercede old standards all together. Keeping up with all these changes and time lines for implementation of the new regulations can be a difficult task for designers and manufacturers.
